The Journey of the Tablet / e-reader

A couple of quick comments on probably one of the most talked about topics on the internet at the moment.

Firstly, it is fascinating to read the numerous articles talking about how the author would never move to an e-reader as the touch, feel, smell and taste (!) of a book is not replaceable.  I am wondering if these same people were around thousands of years ago when we moved from the stone tablet to the paper book, would they have rejected the book!

The big moves now are going to be on software used on these devices, particularly from a corporate perspective.  The usage is limitless in a corporate environment, from the simple presentation of papers for a board meeting to more detailed case files for lawyers (see example at Aquaforest).

Other possible software ideas are:

  • Real-time interactive surveys;
  • Synchronisation with document libraries such as Microsoft’s Sharepoint;
  • Application forms for services or products such as financial services or telecommunications;
  • Medical records in hospitals;
  • Multi-unit document editing in real-time; and
  • Instant document sharing.

So, for those people that would like to collaborate the old way, I will watch with amusement as you pass the stone tablets across to each other and chisel in your comments.

Cheers
